Epoxy Non-yellowing Weather Resistance Applications

  • There are has 20% growth rate for wind energy in every fiscal year. Until 2013, wind energy capacity will exceed 60,000 MW (Figure 1).

Most wind fields are located at remote area or seashore. Wind turbine and engine cover will expose under sunlight and rain to induce polymer degradation or wind turbine cracking (Figure 2). Therefore, it is necessary that introducing UV absorbers to prevent degradation and cracking of Epoxy/UPE resins. 

PS. Basically, wind turbine and engine cover made by epoxy or unsaturated polyester (UPE). Manufacturers will laminate with glass fibers or carbon fibers as the reinforcement for impact and tensile strength.

Everlight followed basic epoxy formula to demonstrate performance:

  1. 1.         EPOXY-A:Chang Chun 188
  2. 2.         EPOXY-B:Yunteh 905-3SH-1 (Modified Cyclo-aliphatic amine)
  3. 3.         A:B=2:1
  4. 4.         Curing condition:50℃ for 24hrs

The table showed that Eversorb is better than competitor. Using Eversorb, delta Yi was drop from 17.9 to 7.52, but competitor was 9.19 (Figure 3).

Otherwise, Everlight also tried a commercial epoxy with/without Eversorb.

 

Conclusion:

        Using Everlight product, Eversorb, the valuable experience from Epoxy resin & UPE resin which are widely used in traditional industries, providing customers of wind power a great improvement in weather resistance, the similar mechanism can be applied also into the protection of solar cell packaging, therefore, successfully extended our contribution to green energy industry.
